Here's something that might interest lads interested in the carp match scene. I've just been having a chat with Gilbert Foxcroft of the very successful South African carp team which has won several World Championship titles in the last few years. He's been telling me about the structure for getting into their national side which is possibly one reason they have been doing so well. Here's what he told me: "You first have to join a club, then fish 4 league matches, then fish provincial trials, then if you're lucky, you are selected for a provincial team (in S.A. we have 12 provincial teams) then take part in the S.A. National Championships from where the first 5 pegs from each of the 3 zones are invited for the National Trials and provided you already have Federation Colours, you take part in a 72 hour trial match where a panel of 3 independent selectors allocate selectors points for a variety of skills (from casting, accuracy, feature finding, neatness, and the position achieved in the match).
