2008 World Carp Angling Championships
The 2008 World Carp Angling Championships is scheduled for 20 to 26 October 2008.
The world championships will for practical infra-structural reasons will be divided into two main activities namely the Carp Fishing Activity itself and the Opening, Welcoming and Price-giving activities. The angling activities will take place at the Bloemhof Dam while the rest of the activities will, due to a lack of first class infra-structure take place in Potchefstroom.
Both Potchefstroom and Bloemhof are located on the N12 national road from Johannesburg to Cape Town via Kimberley. Potchefstroom is 152 km from the OR Tambo (old Johannesburg International) Airport while Bloemhof is located 350 km from the airport. The N12 is a tarred road which is in a reasonably good condition. Roads in the reserve where the dam is situated are generally suitable for all vehicles except when exceptionally wet conditions exist.
The welcoming and other functions will be held in Potchefstroom which is well known for its university and sport facilities. Due to the nice temperatures that exist right throughout the year Potchefstroom is well known as a training centre for athletes from all over the world especially in the European winter. Potchefstroom is blessed with excellent stadiums, accommodation and catering facilities. While in Potchefstroom participants will be accommodated in hotels of a 3 star grading or better.
The small town of Bloemhof is located on the banks of the Vaal River which makes it an ideal tourism destination. The Bloemhof Dam Nature Reserve lies on the shores of the magnificent Bloemhof Dam. The reserve is a 12 000 ha conservancy in open Kalahari scrub, thornveld country offering the visitor a rare combination of game viewing on the reserve while fishing at one of the most popular angling sites in South Africa. The reserve hosts a wide variety of plains game with particularly large herds of springbok, black wildebeest, eland and gemsbok. Over 250 species of birds have been recorded at the reserve including a number of rare waterfowl. The Sandveld Nature Reserve lies on the rivers southern bank, while west of the town you will find the SA Lombard Game Reserve.
The temperature in Bloemhof during the 2008 championships is expected to be between 10 and 28 degrees Celsius with the chances of rain less than 15%.
